Vladimir Putin may have used the called-off coup this past weekend to his political advantage. Politicians in the West have trouble understanding his hold on power because none of them have the kind of popular support Putin does in Russia.
Analysts are still trying to make sense of what happened in Russia over the weekend. It’s being called a failed coup, but some believe it was a CIA-MI6 plot, while others suggest it was misdirection coordinated by Vladimir Putin and Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the mercenary Wagner Group, agreed to leave Russia after a short-lived and confusing insurrection Saturday that ended with Wagner troops back in Ukraine and Prigozhin in Belarus.
