The real reason for separating church and state

It’s not to protect the state from zealous religio-fascists; it’s to protect the faith from the dictates of secular government:

Gays and lesbians will be able to ‘marry’ in church under new laws to be unveiled [in the U.K.] this week.

The historic decision by Liberal Democrat Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone will end the legal definition of marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman.

A gay couple will be able to refer to one of the partners as a ‘husband’, and a lesbian couple will be able to refer to one of the partners as a ‘wife’.

A key part of the reform will bring an end to the ban that prevents civil partnerships being conducted in places of worship.

No doubt this is the direction we’re headed in the U.S. And this is why Christian churches should avoid faith-based initiative funds and wean themselves off of 501(c)3 tax exemptions. Groups dependent on government largesse are the first ones that will be forced to comply with regulations aimed at “fairness” and “equality”.
