Sometimes you have to call it what it is

Evil. The deaths of six people in a shooting rampage that targeted Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) can only be attributed to evil. Accused gunman Jared Lee Loughner sold (or souled) out to it, bought into it, or however you want to phrase it, but the instant attempts to lay blame on talk radio, Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, or gun ownership is a crock.

Loughner, if he is in fact the shooter, has convinced himself that taking another human life is justified, and that’s a manifestation of evil that’s been with humanity long before the discoveries of amplitude modulation, gunpowder, or Republican politics.

The blame game is a double-edged sword. A gay blogger at Daily Kos, whose post has since been scrubbed from the liberal website, declared “Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is dead to me now” in a rant published Thursday.

It’s not likely that “BoyBlue” is connected to the shooting — but if, as Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik suggests, vitriolic political speech is to blame for this horror, then he’s not any less connected than those who’ve been named by the liberal press and blogosphere.

Sadly, most people will fail to assign the blame where it really lies: the shooter, and the powers and principalities he serves.
