When Campbell Brown, the perky but overmatched host of CNN’s 8PM Eastern slot, resigned, I hoped we’d finally get some news in the evening on one of the cable news channels. CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and Headline News have all morphed from broadcasting actual news in prime time to something closer to reality shows over the last couple of years, substituting O’Reilly, Olbermann, Hannity, Grace, Van Susteren, Maddow, Velez-Mitchell, et al for the news of the day. For those of us who work during normal business hours, it’s annoying.
Here, at last, was an opportunity for CNN to reverse the trend and counter-program the Fox and MSNBC offerings at 8PM. When the excellent Candy Crowley hosted the slot last week, Sharon and I hoped that CNN would, if not plug in an evening news hour, at least give the show to a real reporter like Crowley or John King.
Of course, that’s not gonna happen. Disgraced former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who prosecuted prostitutes as N.Y. Attorney General and hired them as governor, will be paired with newspaper columnist Kathleen Sullivan.
Apparently gross betrayal of the public trust is now a ticket to a prime time television job. Watch for Rod Blagojevich to get his own show eventually.
No, I mean you do it. We’ll be watching stuff on our Roku.
