Rick Warren tweets:

If you only preach salvation from hell but not from sin u fill a church with those who want heaven but arent holy. Heb12:14

Hebrews 12:14 reads:

Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

What is Pastor Warren saying? Salvation from hell is salvation from sin. Surely he doesn’t mean that we’re only partly saved by grace, and that living without sin — which is impossible — is required to see the Lord someday.

Maybe that isn’t what he means. But he has invited Peter Scazzero to speak at the upcoming Radicalis conference at his Saddleback Church. Scazzero promotes “an ancient, revolutionary spiritual discipline called The Daily Office”, a legalistic practice developed in monasteries and refined by the Vatican in the Middle Ages.

So, taken in context, you’ll forgive me if I wonder whether Pastor Warren has drifted into pietism. Studying the word of God is important, yes, but I’m not sure that following a scripted routine is the same thing at all.

Pastor Warren’s got it backwards: preach salvation from sin and not from hell and you fill church with pious people who aren’t necessarily going to heaven.
