From the NBA Development League, I give you: the Fort Wayne Mad Ants!
What’s great about the name is the connection to local history. Fort Wayne is named for Revolutionary War General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who commanded the first regular army of the new country, the Legion of the United States.
Wayne’s Legion defeated an Indian force led by Shawnee war chief Blue Jacket (how many hockey fans know why the Columbus team bears his name?) at the Battle of the Fallen Timbers, near the site of the fort and the city named in Wayne’s honor.
The love of history is not yet dead.
