Last night, Sharon and I saw President Barack Obama in a television commercial for his health care proposal.
Now, presidents have used the “bully pulpit” of their office for years to bypass Congress and speak directly to the American people, and presidents have often appeared in public service announcements–stay in school, say no to drugs, join the Peace Corps, things like that. But this is the first time I can remember a president of the United States actually appearing in a television commercial to promote legislation being deliberated by Congress.
I guess it’s not surprising, given that this president has, to paraphrase Missouri Senator Kit Bond, spent more time with David Letterman than with his top general in Afghanistan.
