You won’t hear this during the health care debate

This morning, the resident health care expert on Fox News, a doctor who’s been practicing for decades, cited the recent study (released by Physicians for a National Health Program) that claims 45,000 Americans die every year because they don’t have health insurance.

What he didn’t say — and I don’t believe anyone has raised this issue in the course of the debate over health care reform — is that 784,000 Americans die each year from iatrogenic causes.

“Iatrogenic” means “induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures”.

In other words, by my quick math Americans are nearly 3 times more likely to die from medical care than from lack of health insurance!

Wash your hands, dress warm, and eat plenty of fresh vegetables.
