This is the logical end of socialized medicine. The easiest variable to fix in a government-run health system is access to care:
President Obama suggested at a town hall event Wednesday night that one way to shave medical costs is to stop expensive and ultimately futile procedures performed on people who are about to die and don’t stand to gain from the extra care.
In other words: Grandma’s old, so let’s go for the cheapest option — painkillers over procedures.
Why stop there? Loose the bureaucrats and let them decide who sees the doc! Smokers, drinkers, and fat people won’t be healthy long-term anyway, so cut back on the care to those high-risk groups. They’re breaking the budget!
And with a national DNA database, we can predict who’s likely to suffer early heart attacks or breast cancer and restrict access to expensive but ultimately meaningless treatments for, say, eyes and teeth. Hey, they’re probably going to die young anyway, so why waste the money?
Besides, we need to fund all those free condoms and “morning after” pills for kids.
We will definitely talk about this tonight on P.I.D. Radio.
