A few well-meaning brothers and sisters in Christ have suggested that the awesome performance of Susan Boyle, the 40-something Scottish woman who blew away the audience and judges on Britain’s Got Talent with her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream”, was somehow prophetic. One suggests that Susan was “chosen by God” to sing humanity’s swan song.
Now, I do believe that we’re nearer the end of human history than the beginning. I also believe that the New Age prophecies of the dawning of a shiny Age of Aquarius are deceptive and wrong; times are going to get a lot worse before they get better. We’re headed for hell on Earth, not heaven.
Les Miserables is a wonderful story of sin and redemption, of grace versus works, and “I Dreamed a Dream” is indeed a song of despair — but it’s been around for 30 years. Ascribing a prophetic anointing to Susan Boyle’s wonderful interpretation of it is reading more into the song than what’s there.
