Progressives who backed Barack Obama must be wondering why. Besides the invitation to Rick Warren to deliver his inaugural invocation, the president-elect has loaded his administration-to-be with hawks like Emanuel, Clinton, Jones, and Gates, and now comes the first hint about what Obama meant when he said we needed to focus on Afghanistan instead of Iraq:
The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff says up to 30,000 extra troops could be sent to Afghanistan in 2009, almost doubling the US presence.
This is about 20,000 more troops than Obama said was needed in July. The War Party is pleased.
Remember, the surge in Afghanistan will not translate into a pullout from Iraq.
