The base on balls was the key to tonight’s first game of the playoff series between the Cubs and Dodgers. Lou Piniella made the right decision by starting Ryan Dempster over Carlos Zambrano, who’s been erratic of late, but there’s no way Lou could have guessed that Dempster would walk 7 in 4-2/3 innings.
The Dodgers managed 8 hits in the game, but since three of them were home runs — and one of them followed a hit and a couple of walks — the Cubs basically were walked out of this game.
That makes the second game tomorrow a real question mark. I’d feel a lot better if Carlos Zambrano, a volcano of emotion at times, was taking the mound with the Cubs up a game instead of feeling the pressure to even the series and save the Cubs’ season.
