Convenient test case

Fred Phelps and his followers at the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas are a despicable bunch. That’s why it’s so tempting to support the government’s prosecution of Phelps’ daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, on charges of negligent child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for subjecting her 10-year-old son to the toxic teachings of Grandpa Fred.

I disagree. This could set a dangerous precedent that results in child abuse charges against home-schoolers, parents who refuse to have their pre-teen girls vaccinated against HPV, or Christians who hold to the word of God on issues like homosexuality.

After all, tolerance is good. Teaching a child that another’s lifestyle is sinful is bad. It’s brainwashing. It’s abuse.

Look at this video and substitute “home school” for “Westboro Baptist”. Oh, that would never happen, you say.

Oh, really?

I’m amazed that this video was posted at StopTheACLU.com. Again, Fred Phelps is a despicable man who is in no sense a Christian. But I’m more afraid of putting the government in charge of what I teach my kids than I am of men like Fred Phelps.
