Mother, Daughter, and the Holy Other

Pastor Todd Wilken’s Issues, Etc. program is one of the finest talk shows in America, theological or secular. His “Audio Open Lines” segment is a concept I plan to, uh, borrow for my own show.

I caught up on some of his recent programs this weekend by way of his podcast. A couple of weeks back, he took calls about an Evangelical Lutheran congregation in San Francisco, Ebenezer Lutheran Church, which bills itself as Her Church.

This is an example of the alternative worship offered by Ebenezer Lutheran:

Christian Goddess Rosary — Wednesdays 7:00 PM

EVERY WEDNESDAY, the sanctuary of Ebenezer is open from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Goddess Rosary Beads will be available for use during that time. Prayers and meditations will be on hand as well as incense, candles and bells.

What exactly is the “Goddess Rosary”?

Hail Goddess full of grace.
Blessed are you
and blessed are all the fruits
of your womb.

For you are the MOTHER of us all.
Hear us now
and in all our needs.

O blessed be, O blessed be. Amen

Congregants are also invited on a “Goddess Pilgrimage to Crete”, sponsored by the Ariadne Institute for the Study of Myth and Ritual (Ariadne was the mythological daughter of the King of Crete, abandoned by Theseus and later married by Dionysus, considered to be a fertility goddess).

Bottom line: Ebenezer Lutheran Church isn’t Christian, much less Lutheran. But it is certainly a glimpse into the future of American churchianity.
