Unsurprising, But Still Ate Up

It’s obvious that big money is pushing this so-called Gospel of Judas:

One of the most significant biblical finds of the last century–a lost gospel that could challenge what is believed about the story of Judas and his betrayal of Jesus.

First of all, it’s not a biblical find. Last time I checked, there was no Gospel of Judas in any of the Bible translations I know of.

Second, this document, according to scholars’ best estimates, was written at least a hundred years after Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It was condemned as heresy by Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, before the end of the second century. So, unlike the four canonical gospels, there is no way this was written by Judas and no chain of evidence that leads us to believe that it connects to anyone who knew Jesus personally.

Maybe–just maybe–there are very good reasons that this document has been “lost” since the 4th century. But somebody is spending a lot of money to convince us otherwise.
