As if You Don’t Have Enough to Worry About

Would you believe…bubonic plague?

FLEAS with bubonic plague have been found in the fur of some urban squirrels around the metro area, raising concerns for household pets, especially cats.

A dead squirrel with plague was found at 22nd Avenue and Ames Street, just west of Sheridan Boulevard this week, said David Volkel, zoonosis coordinator for Jefferson County.

And Boulder County Public Health has posted a sign on Mapleton Avenue, just three blocks from downtown Boulder, about a squirrel with the plague found there.

Volkel says if a neighborhood squirrel is confirmed with the plague, it’s probably wise to get pets sprayed for fleas.

Don’t forget, mice infected with plague escaped from a secure lab in New Jersey in September. Have a nice day!
