I finally heard something from Sen. Barack Obama (D-Il.) I can agree with:
“I cannot swallow whole the view of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator,” Obama said. “As a law professor and civil rights lawyer and as an African-American, I am fully aware of his limited views on race. Anyone who actually reads the Emancipation Proclamation knows it was more a military document than a clarion call for justice.”
Thank you! The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the Confederacy, and then it was only those parts of the Confederacy not occupied by Union troops. That would be like George W. Bush declaring that the official religion of Iran is now Christian–great PR value, but no legal or practical effect.
