How is it that all-news networks like Fox, CNN, and MSNBC, with 24 hours to fill every day and an entire world on which to report, can find next to nothing to fill their time for the last three weeks but Terri Schiavo and the pope?
Please don’t misunderstand, these are stories with a lot of interest for viewers, and in the case of Terri Schiavo, a story with important implications for the cultural sea change taking place.
But this is a big world, and, for example, we’re not seeing anything at all on the Angolan Marburg outbreak on TV. This is a disease with an 85% fatality rate so far that appears to be as contagious as your basic flu virus. Pretty big news in a world of global air travel, don’t you think?
Is cable news just a high-tech equivalent of the old shell game?
