Stem Cell Fight Heating Up

You know this is really getting serious when Orrin Hatch and Diane Feinstein are on the same side:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Aiming to circumvent President Bush’s limits on the use of stem cells from human embryos, members of Congress on Wednesday introduced bills to allow federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

Supporters from both major parties joined the coordinated introduction in the House of Representatives and Senate, saying they have given up on persuading Bush to change his policy.

‘If the federal government doesn’t act, we’re going to have a patchwork of state laws — and that’s already happening,’ said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat helping to sponsor the bill.

‘California, for instance, is launching a $3 billion initiative to fund cutting-edge stem cell research. In 2004, New Jersey created a $25 million embryonic stem cell research center,’ Feinstein said.

Wisconsin, Connecticut and New York also have funding measures in the works.

Good heavens, we can’t have the states deciding for themselves!

Feh. Feinstein and her co-sponsors also plan to introduce a bill to provide federal funding of Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer technology–human cloning.

Why? Did we spend tax dollars to develop Viagra? No. And don’t tell me that embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic cloning are any different to Big Biotech. They’re not. It’s the bottom line, baby, and they’ve conned a big chunk of the world into believing that miracles cures are just around the corner if only the poor, starving research scientists could shake a couple of bucks loose from the stingy Bush administration.

Bull puckey. Big Biotech will cheerfully slaughter millions of developing human lives to harvest, package, and sell embryonic stem cells at a healthy profit, and they don’t give a rip whether one single person is ever cured of anything.

And if you and I pay their R & D costs, so much the better.
