The Point of the Moyers Rant

Bill O’Reilly enjoyed beating up on Bill Moyers (not face to face, of course) the other night. Moyers, you remember, was caught by the guys at Power Line for repeating a false story about President Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior, James Watt.

The bigger point, which I haven’t noticed getting much play, is this: Moyers’ op-ed piece was intended to convince readers that Bible-believing Christians are unstable, illogical, and dangerous. He believes that we Christians want to destroy the Earth, burning through all of its resources in a spectacular blaze of consumerism in an effort to hasten the Apocalypse and the Second Coming of Jesus.

Now, nobody I know thinks Bill Moyers is stupid. That’s what makes his editorial so revealing. There is a segment of liberal America that really, truly thinks conservative Christians couldn’t give a rip about the rest of the world, because we’re going to be out of here when the spit hits the pan anyway.

To Moyers’ credit, he has apologized to James Watt. However, he still believes we Bible-thumpers are perfectly happy to gut the Earth while we wait for Christ’s return.

I look for this attitude to spread through the secular left.
