Actors I Watch Even in Lousy Movies

Sitting through bad sci-fi movies has become a cherished weekend tradition at Gilbert House. There are usually redeeming qualities even in the worst of films, even if it’s only the entertainment value we provide each other in making fun of the bad dialogue, gaping plot holes, and rubber monsters.

Last weekend, SciFi debuted another “SciFi Original Film”, a label which is the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for a Guaranteed Bad Movie. But the star was John Rhys-Davies, an actor with the chops to do Shakespeare. You know him from Lord of the Rings (Gimli) and the Raiders of the Lost Ark movies (Sala: “Indy! I am so pleased you are not dead!”)

That got me thinking. Rhys-Davies is just one of a group of actors so compelling that I’ll watch them even in really awful movies. Here’s my by-no-means-definitive list:

  • John Rhys-Davies
  • Gene Hackman
  • Harrison Ford
  • Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, Ravenous)
  • Lance Henriksen (Millennium, best television drama ever)
  • Christopher Walken
  • Sean Connery
  • Michael Caine
  • Johnny Depp

Who have I missed?
