Arlen Specter seems to have forgotten why he’s still in office:
WASHINGTON (Talon News) — Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), who barely survived a tough primary and general election race this year, issued a warning to President George W. Bush on Thursday: don’t nominate conservative judges to be considered for the U.S. Supreme Court.
Hailed as a possible replacement for conservative Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT), whose term as chairman will end when the new session of Congress reconvenes in January, Specter said he “would expect [Bush] to be mindful of the considerations which I am mentioning,” namely for him to select judges who would not overturn the landmark ruling of Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion.
President Bush campaigned heavily for Specter this spring to help him survive a close primary battle with pro-life Republican Pat Toomey. I suspect the president and Sen. Specter are going to have a little sit-down before too long.
