For the record, author Ron Berler, who discovered the ECF in 1981, explains how it works:
1/Any team with three or more ex-Cubs will lose the World Series. (As I’m sure you’re aware, the 2004 Cardinals have three ex-Cubs.)
2/The Ex-Cub Factor takes effect ONLY in the Series.
3/In Series where opponents have two or fewer ex-Cubs, the winner is determined on merit.
The fellas at the office are pinning their hopes on my “accumulated time in a Cubs uniform” theory, which would weigh in favor of the Cardinals. However, Berler is the expert, and he says it’s simple math: The Red Sox are destined to win.
