Liberal friend of mine sends a note and attaches an NPR piece on the 2004 winner of the Peace Prize, Wangari Maathi. His question was why no right-wing nutballs ever win the prize, seeing as how we’re convinced that we know what’s best for everyone.
Well, first of all, unless one considers Henry Kissinger a left-liberal, his facts aren’t entirely accurate.
And, not to denigrate Ms. Maathi, who appears to be a remarkable person, but awarding the Peace Prize to someone whose major accomplishment is planting thousands of trees and encouraging “sustainable development” stretches the definition of “peace”.
Of course, any award for peace that counts among its recipients Yasser Arafat and the United Nations–for its work in Rwanda, no doubt–is suspect from the start.
