Kerry Protesteth Too Much

John Kerry’s complaint with the FEC about the activities of the Swiftboat Vets For Truth is laughable. The argument, as I understand it, is that because the group accepted a couple hundred thousand bucks from rich Republicans, the Swiftees must be cooperating with the Republican Party in violation of election law.

Thanks to OpenSecrets.org, we can see who is really taking money from who and for what:

Committee Total Receipts Total Expenditures
Joint Victory Campaign 2004
$41,685,706
$35,780,404
Media Fund
$28,127,488
$27,208,905
America Coming Together
$26,905,450
$24,196,532
Service Employees International Union
$16,652,296
$8,808,017
American Fedn of St/Cnty/Munic Employees
$13,658,207
$13,274,331
MoveOn.org
$9,086,102
$17,435,782
New Democrat Network
$7,172,693
$6,970,070
Club for Growth
$4,818,063
$6,610,032
EMILY’s List
$4,162,226
$4,070,369
AFL-CIO
$3,750,840
$3,691,832

Of the top ten monied 527 Committees above, only one, the Club For Growth, donated significantly to Republican candidates or causes. In fact, the top three 527s on the list are the de facto fundraising wing of the Democratic Party. So complaints about the few hundred thou the Swiftees are throwing at John Kerry are stunningly hypocritical.

The Democrats are screaming about the Swiftees because they’re dealing with something more powerful than money: The truth.
