Death of a Hero

He turned down $3.6 million to enlist in the Army. He endured the Special Forces training necessary to become a Ranger.

Yesterday, former NFL player Pat Tillman was killed in action in Afghanistan.

Tillman was never motivated by material things; in 2001, he passed on a $9 million offer from the Super Bowl champion Rams out of a sense of loyalty to the Arizona Cardinals. After enlisting, he turned down all interview requests because he wanted to be treated as just another soldier.

Condolences to Mr. Tillman’s widow, Marie, and their families. His sense of duty and honor was rare. Would that more of us shared it.
