Why did Rams coach Mike Martz decide to go for the tie with 39 seconds and a timeout left, and the ball at Carolina’s 15 yard line? There was time for maybe two shots at the end zone, which would have eliminated the need for overtime where one bad play can beat you.
Which, of course, it did. Carolina 29, Rams 23.
Martz’s decision will be debated all summer. In the minds of St. Louis football fans, the field goal at the end of regulation will rank right up there with Grady Little’s decision to leave Pedro Martinez in the game as one of the biggest mistakes in sports this year.
Ah, well, it’s only a game. And thank God I don’t have hundreds of thousands of people looking over my shoulder at work. Coach Martz is in for a long off-season.
