It was all well and good for the US to station half a million men in Saudi Arabia Saddam Hussein had Iraqi troops on the border. But when al Qaida made the American presence in the kingdom a rallying cry for recruiting potential terrorists, the Saudis pulled their welcome mat back inside the tent.
One American diplomat said, “[O]n both sides, actually, the alliance had become a little bit of poison, and both sides were glad to see it end.”
