Acting President of Chechnya Poisoned

The acting president of Chechnya, Anatoly Popov, is seriously ill in a hospital from an unidentified poison. An election critical to Vladimir Putin’s peace plan for Chechnya is set for October 5.

Russian troops say they control Chechnya, which had de facto independence from ’97 to ’99, but Chechen rebels subject Russian troops to daily attacks and have vowed to disrupt the election.

This reads like something from a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum novel. Why aren’t we hearing about this?
