Bush Approval Rating Up

The new Zogby poll shows the job approval ratings for George Bush up five percentage points from a couple weeks ago, with 50% rating his performance “good” or “excellent”.

It’s foolish to read too much into these polls, though, especially when there isn’t a clear opponent on the Democratic side. In a way, it’s an advantage for the hypothetical “Any Democrat”, who Zogby says would beat Bush if the election were held today, since people are comparing Bush to an idealized vapor-candidate.

When people get a better look at whoever the Democratic nominee is and compare warts to warts, then the polls will start to really mean something.
