One of the best character actors of our generation has passed on. Gordon Jump, best known as Arthur Carlson in “WKRP in Cincinnati”, and more recently as the lonely Maytag repairman, died Monday at the age of 71.
I don’t think I ever laughed harder than I did during a Thanksgiving episode in which the WKRP staff dropped turkeys from a helicopter to shoppers at a mall. After the twenty live turkeys hit the parking lot “like sacks of wet cement,” a stunned Arthur Carlson stumbled into the radio station offices and said, “As God is my witness–I thought turkeys could fly.”
Good night, Gordon, and flights of turkeys sing thee to thy rest.
