Okay, maybe it’s early to stick a fork in the Cubs pennant hopes. But the Astros finally lose a game today, and the Cubs promptly go out and roll over for the mediocre Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cubs starting rotation, which had been 7-3 in September (with an ERA smaller than Howard Dean’s chance of beating George Bush), has been hammered in Pittsburgh. In three games, the Pirates have scored 27 runs on the Cubs.
The Cubs are still 1-1/2 games behind Houston with 7 left to play. The fat lady isn’t singing, but I hear her warming up backstage.
